Steve Klein: Searching for Balance

A tenuous moment of harmony is the starting point for Searching for Balance, Steve Klein’s exploration of that fragile, often elusive state. The Bullseye Connection Gallery, October 1 – 30, 2004.

Portland, OR –The Bullseye Connection Gallery presents Steve Klein’s Searching for Balance, an exhibition of kilnformed glass on view October 1 - 30, 2004.

“My recent work seeks to explore, appreciate, and have fun with the fragile state of balance,” says Klein. “In everyday life there are moments that require compromise, resolution and action to create balance. I am challenged by that act of balancing and this is what my work addresses. Through the use of shape, color, stripes, line, texture and the incomparable reflection of light that only glass can provide, I create situations that question this balance.”

Klein is a respected and successful studio artist who also teaches workshops internationally in Scotland, Spain, Canada and the United States. “Klein’s pieces, which consist of blown-glass spheres made from fused cane that sit on top of slumped slabs of fused cane, bring the decisiveness of Piet Mondrian’s and Barnett Newman’s purely abstract and perfectly balanced paintings into three dimensions only to blow them out of context and arrive at something unique,” says Kurt Shaw, art critic for the Pittsburg Tribune-Review.

Klein was a Pilchuck Glass School Saxe Award Nominee in 2000 and 1998.
