Steve Klein: Memory and Consequence

Portland, OR - Steve Klein presents kilnformed and blown sculptures for “Memory and Consequence,” his solo exhibition at the Bullseye Gallery, August 11 - September 23, 2006. Klein’s graphic shapes and clustered spheres can exist solely as forms but often take on human characteristics or express emotions when presented in the artist’s striking tableaux.

“My recent work seeks to explore and appreciate memories, consequences and the fragile state of balance,” says Klein. “During the past three summers, I’ve spent a significant amount of time in Caithness County, Scotland. A great deal of that area, adjacent to the North Sea, is untouched, unencumbered and unpolluted. The sky is grand, the horizon line changes constantly, the wind patterns on the water create abstract compositions of light and movement, and the landscape is wonderfully carved by time and the harsh elements.”

Klein’s time in Scotland was centered around North Lands Creative Glass, where he participated in a workshop in 2005. Klein has also completed recent residencies at Pilchuck Glass School and the Penland School of Crafts. His work is included in the following collections:

Bullseye Glass Co., Portland, OR
Museo del Vidrio, La Granja, Spain
North Lands Creative Glass, Lybster, Scotland
Museum Of Art and Design, New York, NY
The Studio at Corning, Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, NY
